The 2015 Arsies: January 26, 2015

January 26, 2015 arse

In what is surely by now a familiar refrain, two very different challenges square off tonight. Doom metal auteurs Agalloch go first. The Serpent & The Sphere is a powerful and sprawling work that crawls into your head. It's such a gorgeous piece of music that I even hesitate to call it doom, although that's the closest shoebox to cram it into. But its power is completely in the immediate present, as you listen to it. Once the listening is done, it's difficult to recall what it was that just moved you. Not so with the Soreption, which sticks to your broken ribs. And while it's difficult to try to compare the relative merits of both band's albums, Engineering The Void easily proves to be the more memorable and impactful album in the long run. Add to that the undeniable fact that Soreption just tear shit up unmercifully , and you've got a clear path to victory. Congrats to Soreption on their second win! Let's see how they fare against Triptykon next week.
Tomorrow, two other very different challengers square off: Inter Arma and Distorted Harmony!
