The 2015 Arsies: February 11, 2015

February 11, 2015 arse

This was a very close one, metalfriends. BCI got to start the evening's moshery, and The Wreckage Of Stars continues to sound fresh and original, even after at least 10 listenthroughs at this point. Hearing it again still reminds me a bit of the first time I heard a full-on metalcore album (which I believe was KSE's The End Of Heartache, not so much as a comparison of the genre stylings, but more the sense that I was hearing the beginning of something different but obviously significant. Perhaps that's just a hallmark of the epicness of the metal here. That's not to say that Fallujah lack epicness of their own, and in fact The Flesh Prevails succeeds in many of the same ways that The Wreckage Of Stars does, with the one caveat that Fallujah prefer jazzy technicality and speed for out-and-out brutality. But the metal is more memorably metallic on the BCI, the experimentalism more consistently successful. So as much as I want to give the nod to fellow San Franciscans, it's Black Crown Initiate who take the day! They make their way to a Semifinal bout against veterans Cannibal Corpse on Friday.
Tomorrow, we finish up the Quarterfinal rounds, starting with Aborted and Revocation.
