The 2015 Arsies: February 10, 2015

February 10, 2015 arse

For me, the most interesting thing about this battle is that both JFAC and BABYMETAL have had to overcome their own credibility gaps to make it this far. The former have been plagued by the stigma of a shitty band name and past criticisms of being genre clones, and the latter (who have the honor of going first tonight) is pretty much a joke on paper. But BABYMETAL time and again have used their underdog status to shock and awe from their first listen through every round in this tournament. Sure, there are elements that are hard to swallow, but if you're open to a little Nutrasweet on your meat and potatoes... well, I've already gone too far with the food metaphor. All of that said, listening to Sun Eater immediately after listening to BABYMETAL all but eradicates the J-metal from your brain. Whereas the metal you hear in BABYMETAL burbles up from behind the teen vocals with surprising potency, Sun Eater puts its metal front and center, and the surprise therein isn't that it's legit, but that it's so next-level. Sorry JaPaBo... but your beloved countrygals are finally stopped in their tracks by Job For A Cowboy. But aren't you surprised at how far they made it?
The end is in sight, folks. Tomorrow, we find out if Triptykon or Cannibal Corpse are the first of our four Quarterfinalists.
